QASA approached the Momentum Fund for funding to hold care attendant training workshops at each of the QASA Self Help Centre’s. The high prevalence of pressure sores amongst QASA Self Help Centre residents has been the cause of much concern over the past few years. In some circumstances, residents have died due the severity of their pressure sores. Compounding this issue is the lack of capacity amongst care givers. Very few of the care givers have had formal training about pressure sores and the general care of paraplegics and quadriplegics.

The training was held during 2008. The Care Attendant Training Manual is the course material that was taught at the training. Each person who attended the training received a copy of the manual on completion of the course.

The manual covers the following:
  • Definitions
  • Day to day tasks
  • Checklist for pressure sores
  • Skin health & inspection
  • Pressure care / prevention
  • Identifying pressure wounds (all stages of development)
  • Treating pressure wounds
  • Risk factors
  • Photography as a tool in the prevention of pressure wounds
  • Dressing selection
