Who We Are

The QuadPara Association of South Africa (QASA) is considered the leading agency representing persons with spinal cord injury and physical disability in South Africa. QASA is a NPO of Quadriplegics and Paraplegics. QASA strives to develop products, programmes and services in order to develop capacity amongst its members and to offer opportunities for societal integration.

Our History History

In June 1978, a group of quadriplegics in Johannesburg decided to establish QASA as a national coordinating structure representing all quadriplegic associations in South Africa. Since then, QASA has grown to include six regional associations (Eastern Cape, Gauteng North, Gauteng South, KwaZulu/Natal, North West and Western Cape) and a membership of more than 6500 quadriplegics and paraplegics. Over the years, QASA has initiated, extended and refined its services and programmes to meet the needs of its members as well as the disability sector.

Strategic Components

Mandate

QASA was founded pursuant to the Non Profit Organizations Act and represents the autonomous Regional Associations as reflected in its constitution.

  • The Association is a body corporate and has an identity distinct from its members or office bearers.
  • The official mandate is derived from the basis that the Association is legally constituted.
  • The constitution has been amended and approved during the annual general meeting conducted on31 August 2008.

Mission

To combat quadriplegia and paraplegia Protecting and furthering of interest of quadriplegics and paraplegics by the formulation of national policy and strategy

The South African Disability Alliance (SADA) is a voluntary consultative forum of national disability organization. SADA’s work is aligned with the goal of advancing the rights and freedoms of persons with disabilities in South Africa and the improvement of our quality of life.

DPSA

Disabled People South Africa (DPSA) is a nonprofit and democratic cross-disability body made up of member organizations of disabled people that mobilizes and advocate for their rights for attainment of equal opportunity. DPSA is recognized as the national assembly of disabled people by Disabled People International (DPI), which has observer status in the United Nations.

The Southern African Spinal Cord Association (SASCA) provides information to health care professionals and policy makers, promotes the treatment and rehabilitation of the spinal cord injured, and networks with governmental and non-governmental organizations, academic institutions and other service providers.

SASCA was formed in 1993 and we affiliated with the International Spinal Cord Society (ISCS).

The aim of SASCA is the study of all problems concerning traumatic and non-traumatic afflictions of the spinal cord and more particularly the advancement in medical and surgical intervention, rehabilitation and social reintegration of the spinal cord paralyzed.
