QuadPara Association of South Africa

Assisting with assistive devices

Our vision is that all quadriplegics and paraplegics will live their lives to their full potential. The first step in realising this vision is to assist our members with securing the necessary assistive devices, which can range from a wheelchair to voice-recognition software. Each application is viewed on a case-by-case basis.

Here are some of the assistive devices we can help you require. (This is not a comprehensive list and members are welcome to submit an application for other assistive devices.)

Wheelchair

A wheelchair is one of the most used assistive devices to promote mobility, independence, and enhance quality of life for persons with mobility impairments. Wheelchair mobility opens up opportunities for wheelchair users to study, work, engage in social activities and access services such as healthcare.

In addition to providing mobility, an appropriate wheelchair benefits the physical health and quality of life of the users by helping in reducing common problems such as pressure sores, progression of deformities and improve respiration and digestion.

Cushions

A wheelchair cushion offers much more than just comfort. Although it can assist with shock absorption, it helps with posture and pressure relief. This can help prevent ulcers and contribute to the long term health of the individual.

Voice recognition software

Speech/Voice Recognition Software is used to operate a device, perform commands, or write without having to use a keyboard, mouse, or press any buttons. It plays a key role in providing individuals with a high level of spinal cord injury with more freedom and independence.

Typing/Mouth sticks

Typing Sticks assists people with limited hand function to accurately type. It can be safely used on any type of keyboard without harming the keys.

A mouth stick is an assistive device enables a person perform activities like typing, pressing buttons, turning pages and even drawing.

Both play a crucial role in assisting the individual to use technology. This can help them build a virtual community, connect and communicate, or even find employment.

There are many more assistive devices that can assist members with improving their lives. If there is any assistive device that you require, reach out to QASA and we will see how we can best assist you.
